Girls Go Down To Gunners

August 28, 2005

Bristol Academy girls went down to Arsenal ladies this afternoon after taking the lead in the first half.

The girls started well and took the lead through Trudi Williams, last season’s golden boot winner, in the 36th minute. The lead was short lived however, with Arsenal replying through Alex Scott,(40) and doubling their lead in their next attack by virtue of an own goal from Gas girls defender Grainne Kierans.

Half Time 1-2

The second half saw Bristol Academy come out looking to create, but on 65 minutes  Arsenal further extended their lead through Cira Grant.

Into the last 15 minutes, Arsenal’s superior fitness started to show and on 81 minutes, England international Kelly Smith, on as a substitue, put the Gunners lead up to 4-1. Rachael McArthur ended any hopes of a revival with a further goal for the visitors on 84 minutes.

Despite the scoreline, the girls in the quarters gave as good as they got, but a disappointed Gary Greene kept them in the dressing room for 3/4 of an hour afterwards and was given plenty to think about before their next game.
