Leeds United Ladies  v  Bristol Academy Ladies  Premier League Sun 18th Sep

Bristol Academy Ladies went to Leeds hoping to repeat last week’s win in the league cup, but it was not to be.
Leeds started the brightest but the first corner was to the Gas, which was partly cleared, the ball then falling to Tara Kidwell who found Carla Ward who shot wide. The Gas continued to press forward and forced a number of corners before in the11th minute a corner from the right came in high under the bar and was headed in by Kate Holtham.

Leeds started to get back into the game and a through ball from England international Sue Smith found Karen Burke but her shot was well saved by Siobhan Chamberlain. Then a Leeds corner was headed away by Grainne Kierans before in the 35th minute came the equaliser. Siobhan Chamberlain mishandled a corner from the right by Sue Smith, although she looked to have been fouled, and the loose ball was bundled into the net.

The second half saw Karen Ward replaced by Dani Bird. Although Leeds looked the livelier, the Gas Girls took the lead on 51 minutes. A free kick from Kate Holtham saw a mix up between the Leeds goalkeeper and a defender. The ball fell loose in the six-yard box and Tara Kidwell pounced to stab the ball into the net. The lead was short lived because in the 60th minute a cross from Sue Smith found the former England captain Karen Walker on the far post to head into the net.
There followed two bookings, Leeds Alex Culvin for dissent and the Gas Dani Bird for a foul. [image2]

In the 81st minute, the Gas made another substitution bringing on Carrie Kveton for Carla Ward.
Further goal-scoring chances were limited, the best effort from Leeds being a free kick from just outside the box being hit into the wall and picked up by Siobhan Chamberlain, and the Gas with a last minute corner straight to the Leeds goalkeeper.

A draw was probably a fair result for two evenly matched sides although the Gas Girls will be disappointed in twice losing the lead.
For the Gas Tara Kidwell impressed with her running and determination and Vinnie Jones and Sarah Elnicky were solid in the centre of defence, whereas for Leeds, Sue Smith was always a threat and instrumental in most of their attacks.
