Point On The Road For The Girls
October 24, 2005
A disappointing performance saw the Gas Girls lucky to get a point when they hoped to get all three against a team struggling for points in the Ladies Premier League.
In the first half the gas created the better chances with Kate Ward having a shot blocked by the goalkeeper and chipping a shot onto the roof of the net, Katie Holtham running through from the half way line but seeing her shot from 15 yards just going wide and Tara Kidwell heading wide from a corner.
In the second half it was Chelsea’s turn to have the better chances with Nicki De La Salle shooting wide from 20 yards and the gas goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain making a good save at the feet of Ellen White who was through on goal.
In the 68th minute the gas thought they had scored, when following a free kick the ball was scrambled over the line only for the referee’s assistant to rule out the goal for offside. [image2]
In the 85th minute Chelsea should have taken the lead after being awarded a penalty following a push in the back by Sarah Elnicky. Nicki De La Salle sent Siobhan Chamberlain the wrong way, but saw her shot go well wide of the goal.
Before the end the Gas had a couple of chances with Tara Kidwell shooting into the side netting from a tight angle and then following a cross from Carrie Kveton, Heike Zijlstra finished up handling the ball when well placed in the six yard box.
The point kept the girls in the lower reaches of the league and a big improvement is required if they are to climb into the top half.
