January 7th 1956
October 31, 2005
January 7th 1956, possibly one of Rovers finest hours. The day the famous Busby Babes came to Bristol for a routine win to take them through to the next round of the FA Cup. Who could possibly have predicted the home side winning by a convincing 4 goals to nil in front of an Eastville crowd of 35,872.
Let me type that result in bold for you all to enjoy.
Bristol Rovers 4 Manchester United 0
Goals from Alfie Biggs (2), Barrie Meyer and a late penalty from Geoff Bradford to complete the rout.
‘Bristol Rovers Overwhelm Manchester United’, boasted one national paper. [image2]
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the historic win, the Supporters club Social committee are currently working on an evening to celebrate and hope you will be able to come along. Currently we are working on getting footage of the match, old photos, memorabilia and also hoping to get some ex Gas players along for the evening.
Were you there? Do you have anything from the match or the period that you could lend us or bring along on the night that would be of interest, maybe you still have the programme, rosettes, scarves?
If you would like to write about your memories of that match or other matches at Eastville, or about some of the players who played in it, please drop me a line. We can feature it on this site, along with any pictures you may have if we can borrow them, or with images available to us. Go on, do it.
