It’s Lennie – Official!
November 7, 2005
Today, at a Press Conference at the Memorial Stadium, Bristol Rovers unveiled the new management team of Lennie Lawrence (Director of Football) and Paul Trollope (First Team Coach).
Football Club Chairman Geoff Dunford explained that the time taken since the departure of the previous manager to this announcement was down to the facts that the standard of applicants was so high and, as has been rumoured, the Board were denied permission to talk to one manager, causing the applicants to be reviewed.
Geoff then introduced Lennie who outlined the reasons why he decided to accept the Board’s offer and was delighted to work alongside Paul. With Lennie’s experience in football and Paul’s knowledge of the current squad and set up, Lennie was convinced that the two of them would compliment each other.
Lennie also stressed that he was keen for the Club to work on the basis of openness and transparency, from the Board to the team to the fans, he wanted to ensure that everyone was fully aware of what was required of them and what he and Paul were trying to achieve.
Paul echoed Lennie’s comments and thanked the Board for giving him the opportunity to cut his teeth in management and for the faith they showed in him by confirming him as First Team Coach. He went on to say that in conversations between himself and Lennie, it was obvious that they both had the same view on the way the game should be played.
This was backed up by Lennie in that he confirmed his philosophy that football should be a “passing game” and not involve “lumping it as far as you can”. We are sure that no one can disagree with those comments. In fact, it was mentioned that one of the first things Lennie did was to request that the pitch be widened to allow more space on the wings and an inspection of the pitch confirmed this had already been done.
In conversations we had with Lennie, Paul and members the Board, we have to report that the vibe from everyone was extremely positive – there was genuine excitement about the appointments.
On behalf of Bristol Rovers Supporters Club, we would like to welcome Lennie and Paul to their roles and wish them and the team all the very best for the future.
The Supporters Club would also like to thank Paul Trollope and John Anderson for their hard work during the interim period since Ian Atkin’s departure.
The Football club Press Statement in Full:
“After carefully selecting and interviewing many applicants the Board have decided upon a two tier management approach with a director of football and a first team coach.
Lennie Lawrence has been appointed Director of Football and will evaluate the entire football structure of the Club, including contracts, scouting, our centre of excellence, and the youth and first team squads. We have refrained from appointing a team manager at this juncture, and Paul Trollope will continue in his role as First Team Coach and will be responsible for the first team training, selection and tactics.
Paul has been aware of this process and he is looking forward to working with Lennie to change our playing fortunes.
Both Lennie and Paul have the full support of the Board of Directors”
