La Manga Trip For Gas Girls
January 9, 2006
Once again two players from the Bristol Academy ladies side have been selected for the England winter training camp. Held in La Manga, Spain, the news of our girls being selected proves we have some quality players within the side despite a difficult campaign in the Womens Premier League this term.
The two girls selected are goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain and Kate Holtham, congratulations to them both. The opportunity offers a chance to pick up some extra tips from the national coaching staff which can only be of benefit to both the girls and to the Bristol Academy team as a whole.
In general this is probably a high point in the Gas Girl’s season which has presented the squad with a number of problems to hamper their progress. Last season’s golden boot winner, Trudi Williams, was forced to retire early into the season which proved a massive blow to the squad.
Having already lost last season’s player of the season and Dutch national captain Annemiek Griffioen, boss Gary Green also had to deal with a number of new signings trying to gel, and injuries to key players, making early progress very difficult.
The league table shows the Gas Girls in a position of safety though not challenging for the tops spots, but signs are that as the girls have come back from injury towards the end of the season things have been improving as the squad has got stronger. If the squad can be kept together for next season, things could be very different. [banner3]
