Running With Rovers 2
February 20, 2006
A dozen Bristol Rovers supporters sponsored by SAM Learning Ltd trained hard over the summer months to complete the Bristol Half Marathon last October. Training for the event and also raising funds for five primary schools in the vicinity the Memorial Stadium. The schools to benefit were St Teresa’s, Ashley Down, Romney Ave, Upper Horfield and Filton Ave.
Many months of effort, true Gashead grit and shear determination culminated in the presentation of £200 to each school during half time at the Bury game. Rod Wesson was on hand to present the cheques and to hand out goody bags to the children representing the schools.
Funds raised by Rovers Runners were split on a 50-50 basis with the remaining money being donated to the Football Club to be spent on children’s amenities and newly resurrected Study Centre at the Stadium.
Ken Masters, event organiser and himself a runner says “We were pleased to support local schools because it serves to demonstrate the willingness of Bristol Rovers and its’ supporters to embed the Football Club and do good in the local community. The money to be spent at the Stadium will improve education facilities and can be used by children from schools across the whole of Bristol.”
Parents and grandparents accompanied children representing the schools. In the case of St. Teresa’s, head teacher Bernard Brain put his own name forward. Bernard is a keen Rovers fan himself and expressed grateful thanks to all concerned. For teacher Anne DeSusa from Romney Ave it was her first visit to the Mem. and indeed to any football match. Anne was quick to thank Bristol Rovers for their hospitality as well as to the Runners for their donation to the school.
Rovers Runners are looking to go again in 2006. Experience has shown that entries need to be in early. The easiest way to enter is online. Lines will open in late February. Bristol is the second largest half marathon in the country after the Great North Run and will take place on Sunday September 17th. Supporters Club member Yvonne Mockridge is helping Ken with the organisation this time round. Look out for them around the ground at the home matches coming up.
