The Mem To Go Smoke Free

Bristol Rovers are marking National No Smoking Day by announcing the revised policy for smoking at the Memorial Stadium starting next football season.

The Football Club and Supporters Club have been in consultation to decide a policy that recognised forthcoming government legislation but still gave fans an opportunity to make their personal choice on smoking for the 2006-2007 season.

There will be no smoking in any seated areas of the Stadium (stands and executive box areas) and also no smoking on the Family Terrace next season. Smoking would still be allowed on all other terrace areas.

In addition all bars at the Memorial Stadium will be no smoking except for the Bristol Room in the clubhouse area, which is open to all fans before and after matches.

Supporters Club Chairman John Malyckyj said “We have reached a point where Rovers have to react to the government legislation on smoking. We have discussed the issue with supporters both face to face and through other media such as the online Fans Forum. As a result the Supporters Club committee agreed a proposal to put to the football club, which we were pleased they accepted.

We have decided to make an early announcement of our policy so supporters are aware before they purchase their season tickets. We thought it best to keep the Supporters Club Bar, with the big TV screen and live bands after matches, free from smoke and allow smoking in the other main bar in the Clubhouse. Of course for the following season all bars will have to be non smoking., but by taking the initiative like this in the short term, it is hoped the transition will be made that much easier for when our hand is forced by law.

“Likewise we wanted to keep areas of the ground where movement was limited, such as the seated areas, free from smoking while allowing it in the terraced areas. Again we will review this policy at the end of the 2006-2007 season.

“I hope this decision helps all Gasheads, whether smokers or non smokers, enjoy matches at the Memorial Stadium.”
