Trolls Signs 2 Year Contract
March 16, 2006
It was confirmed at an afternoon press conference at the Memorial Stadium on Wednesday 15 March that First Team Coach Paul Trollope had signed a contract extension, taking him through to the end of the 2007/2008 season.
The conference itself was a bit of a rush-job with the players and staff about to set off for the ill-fated trip to Oxford United.
Paul spoke of his ambitions for the club, stating that he believed that club really should be in League One due to the level of support. He said how he had formed an effective partnership with Lennie Lawrence and that they shared the same philosophy about how the game should be played.
When asked about why things had improved under his coaching he replied simply that it was down to the players.
Once the conference was over, I asked him how he felt the supporters could ‘learn to love Trolls’. His one word reply was, ‘Results’. He is very aware that the sole measure of success for his tenure in charge will be how the team performs. Nothing else will matter. He knows this and fully understands the expectation at our club.
[image2] I was very impressed by the way Trolls conducted himself at the conference and in the one-to-one chats, whether with journalists or with a fan like me. There is no bull, there are no excuses, there are no false promises. Just honest answers and a belief in the way the game should be played.
In my view, the manager needs three things in order to make a real mark at the Rovers. He needs luck, he needs time and he needs results, not necessarily in that order.
Following the dismal defeat at Oxford we must all be aware of the amount of hard work that will be needed by the management team in order to turn this club around. I think the season may have died on the day Trolls was appointed although he can’t be blamed for that. In fact, he was the man who got us into a position to challenge in the first place.
Learn to love Trolls, guys. He’s the man for the next couple of years. Let’s give him a chance.
