Back The New Mem Now

November 4, 2006

The Supporters Club is asking all Rovers fans to get behind the club’s recently submitted planning application by writing their personal letter of support to Bristol City Council.

Below is a letter of support that you can send straight to Bristol City Council. All you have to do is add you name and address at the top. Also date and sign at the bottom

Alternatively you can simply write a letter in your own words, or a combination of both, to the address shown below. This form of personal letter gives a better impression, showing that the writer is willing to spend a little more time and effort to register their views.

Please send letters to:

Head of Planning Services, Bristol City Council, Brunel House, St. George’s Road, Bristol, BS1 5UY.

Fans can also lend their support by e-mailing their comments to the council at
Ref: Memorial Stadium Regeneration Scheme Application No. 06/03850/F

The support of fans is critical to the success of this scheme. There will be those who will write to the council opposing this scheme and it is important that as many fans as possible express their views in writing (or e-mail) in support.

At the time of writing we are coming towards the end of the 21 day statutory consultation period that is part of the planning process. The Council planning officers will then compile their report and recommendations for the Planning Committee that will decide the application. The date for the Committee hearing is earmarked for the 13th December – what a fantastic Christmas present that will be for all us long suffering fans if at last we are given the green light to build ourselves a new home – one that meets current standards and expectations for supporters to watch Bristol Rovers.

Here is a sample of how the letter could read.

Dear Sir/Madam
Ref: Memorial Stadium Regeneration Scheme Application No. 06/03850/F

I am writing to you in support of the planning application recently submitted by Bristol Rovers Football Club for the redevelopment of the Memorial Stadium.
The stadium cannot continue in its present state. It is already substandard in terms of the current requirements of the Football League and the Rugby Premiership and in terms of the expectations and aspirations of spectators and other non-matchday customers. Continuing the practice of “patch and mend” is simply not sustainable.
The search for a suitable and deliverable site for a purpose built stadium has been going on for 20 years without success.
In developing the scheme to this stage the football club has demonstrated its ability for innovation in finding a fundable solution to the need to upgrade its facilities.
The club has demonstrated its ability to invest in a multi-million pound scheme to provide a sound basis for improving its status in the Football League that will improve the profile of Bristol as a whole.
Rovers have shown great vision in developing plans for a multi-use stadium that will add life and vibrancy to this part of Horfield and to the City of Bristol.
For all of the above reasons I am giving my full support to this regeneration scheme and would ask the council also to give its backing by approving the application.

Yours Sincerely,
