Fans View – C. Palace – William Holt

August 16, 2007

The first home fixture of the season brought Championship side Crystal Palace to the Memorial Stadium.

The first half was a quiet affair with no goalmouth action of note except the visitor’s goal.  A well taken free kick taken by Freedman, from 20 yards, went over the wall to nestle in the top left hand side of the goal, Phillips having no chance. Rovers never really got going and it was somewhat a relief when the half time whistle went.

The second half sparked into life following a double substitution, with Jacobson and Lambert replacing Haldane and Williams. Williams had put himself about and ran tirelessly to no avail, but it would have been good experience for him.

Rovers came to life with crosses coming in from both flanks as they took the game to Palace. This was rewarded with a goal from Disley who made one of his darting runs into the box to slot it past the keeper. It was entertaining end to end stuff to the final whistle.

Extra time produced a number of chances for Palace, Kuqi heading wide when he should have scored, Phillips making a great save from Freedman, and a fantastic goal line clearance from Elliott.

Penalties ensued with Walker scoring for Rovers first, this followed by another super save from Phillips, diving to his right to deny Freedman. Jacobson scored our second, Morrison replying for Palace. Disley slotted our third away but Kuqi managed to hit the top the bar and that left Anthony to slot home the winner to the delight of the Gasheads.

Palace might feel a bit aggrieved at the result, but they did not take the chances they created, Rovers will be happy with second half performance and not least the result!
