Around Rovers

[image1]The Football League has now written to all clubs asking them to nominate for the annual awards for 2009 in conjunction with the FourFourTwo magazine. The League is asking for nominations in a number of categories. Work in the community features again as does the match day programme. On the football side there is an award for apprentice professionals and for best goals scored in the Championship, League 1 and League 2 respectively.

Now in its fifth year the awards event gives the clubs the recognition they deserve for both on and off the field excellence. The ceremony to present the awards will be held at some time in the early spring. The closing date for entries for the best goal will be around early in the New Year.

Rickie Lambert went so close to picking up the award for League 1 Goal of the Year 2007. The goal was selected by Rovers supporters and short listed for its spectacular quality. Rickie was just pipped for top spot by Leeds United’s Jermaine Beckford who we will see again in Leeds colours at the Memorial Stadium this evening.

Rickie’s wonder strike against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road came early in the 2007-2008season. It was a wonderful goal from a long way out and scored with every intention. It was very unlucky not to take the top prize in that year and was easily the best goal in my view.

Remember that the Goal of the Year award is for the calendar year January to December and that it is not a seasonal award. This time around we will be looking for nominations for goals scored in the second half of last season, 2008-9 and in the first half of this one 2009-10.

In 2008 we again made the top 20 list with Joe Kuffour’s magnificent effort at The Walkers Stadium against table topping Leicester City. Many of us thought Joe had done enough to win us the game but Leicester’s late burst denied us on the day. It was a great strike and well deserving of a place on the short list.

The League is very keen that supporters should be involved in the nominations from each club. I am raising the issue again so that you can look out for the goal that you think deserves nomination from Bristol Rovers and one that stands a chance for making it through to the shortlist and perhaps picking up the award for 2009.

Players no longer with the club can of course still be nominated. For me Rickie Lambert’s goal in the home game with Cheltenham Town in the spring was a real peach. Those of up at Hartlepool United earlier in the season saw a quality bit of football from Joe Kuffour. On the stroke of half time Joe demonstrated tremendous close control on the turn before shooting beautifully to give us the lead and ultimately to secure all three points on the night.

The wonderful effort by Willo at Saints down at Saint Mary’s in our League match there will feature in any competition. The football leading up to the goal was quality and the way that Andy cut in from the left, picked his spot and pulled the trigger was unforgettable.

Chris Dickson’s well timed lob at Brentford is also attracting attention as a strong contender. Then there is the excellent Jeff Hughes effort to level the scores in the home fixture against Carlisle just a few weeks ago; great footwork by former Crystal Palace man after moving up the field from the left back position and curling a shot into the far corner of the net just inside the post and giving the opposition keeper no chance.

The goal spurred us on the win the game with a last gasp goal from Chris Lines so bringing to an end to our pour run of results. Who knows what’s to come today, up at Tranmere, on Boxing Day against Walsall and at the final game at Millwall.

Supporters are invited to nominate for Goal of the Year, 2009. A nomination form can be found at the bottom of this page. Please keep it safe, complete and return the form in January. Leave the form with Pirate Leisure or at 199. Alternatively pass to me on a matchday in the New Year, Stockport County or Hartlepool United would be good. You can also email [email protected].
