Well, here it is, the day that most of us never believed would happen. Bristol Rovers are in the Conference just a year after being made favourites for promotion from League 2. It has been a struggle for me to come to terms with all this; as I’m sure it is for you great supporters. However, the time for complaining has to end if we are to make any progress back up into the League.
The Memorial Stadium pitch will no longer be torn up by the ‘egg-chasers’ but we lose valuable income that will now go to Bristol Sport. Darrell Clarke has now put together his own squad with a different style of play and he is still recruiting. Those of you who attended pre-season ‘friendlies’ will be aware that we have a new ‘cult-hero’ in the ‘Viking-like’ Stuart Sinclair.
Whether or not we will be successful enough to make a challenge on that top spot remains to be seen but it certainly won’t be easy. In theory we have our hardest possible home start as Grimsby were beaten play-off finalists back in May.
Adding to the spice of a live-televised start is the return of a favourite son, Craig Disley, who has performed with distinction for the ‘Mariners’ since leaving us. On Tuesday we have a tricky trip to ‘Mad Dog’s Barnet in their new ‘Bee Hive’ and then a long run up the M6 to Altrincham. By next Saturday evening we’ll have a good idea what it’s all about so let’s hope we can enjoy the journey.
Up the Pirates!
