Jim’s Jottings

December 18, 2014

Welcome back to the ‘Mem’ for another vital home game just six days after Rovers exited the F.A. Trophy at our very first hurdle and that being at the hands of our close rivals and former landlords Bath City – a team one whole division below us in football’s pyramid. The best I can say about that truly awful performance is that at least is was not a League, (Conference!), match and better still that the ‘Romans’ did it at the first opportunity for a Tuesday night reply was the last thing we needed!

That said it was a tie Rovers should have got through, albeit with a weakened team, but we never really looked like scoring again and two terrible pieces of defending cost us a real chance of another Wembley appearance. (continued.)

Since we last wrote this column there have been several new signings, including the emergency loan acquisition of goalkeeper Fabien Speiss as a result of losing both our senior custodians in the space of a few weeks. After Will Puddy broke his arm in the GFA Cup win over Cinderford the last thing we wanted was a serious injury to Steve Mildenhall but that’s exactly what happened in a quite amazing match at Wrexham. The large ‘Gas’ contingent at the Racecourse really didn’t know whether to laugh or cry after a game that saw us lose the influential Lyle Della-Verde to a serious looking knee injury followed by ‘Mildy’s departure just before the interval. Whatever your views on the management or team selection we have to forget about the F.A. Trophy and ‘concentrate of the league’, starting of course at 7.45, so please get behind the lads and let’s get some more goals and points on the board come bedtime!

Up the Pirates!
