This is the end of an institution, the curtailment of a folk tradition, the forced demise of long-standing custom.
On Monday there will be no more gurning, no more collective shouting of “Hello mum”, no more insertions of a sex toy into an unsuspecting reporter’s ear.
Because no longer will Sky Sports News station reporters outside stadiums and training grounds for hours on end on transfer-deadline day.
Because of the increasing boisterousness of the public involvement in the process, the broadcaster says it can no longer guarantee the safety of its staff.
From now on, Sky will relay news of imminent signings from behind locked gates.
