ALDERSHOT TOWN 1. v. 2. SOUTHPORT

Paul Carden’s Southport shocked the Shots with two goals in the opening 24 minutes at the Electrical Services Ground. The switched on Port’s maximum points haul in Hampshire gave the Sandgrounders a major boost in their Vanarama Conference survival fight.

Paul Smith capitalised on the Port’s early pressure finishing in space on the turn after excellent 18th minute interplay from Richard Brodie and on loan Tranmere Rovers striker George Donnolly.

On loan Fleetwood defender Tom Davies nearly added a second, meeting a Brodie lay off two minutes later but from close range lifted his effort agonisingly over the cross bar.

Charlie Joyce forced home keeper Phil Smith into a scrambling parry as Aldershot struggled. Home keeper Phil Smith could do nothing on 24 minutes as Paul Smith turned creator on the right byline measuring his pull back pass to perfection for Donnolly to fire powerfully into the bottom left hand corner.

Aldershot thought they had pulled a goal back on 31 minutes when in a frenetic scramble Peter Brezovan was able to block on the line with Jordan Roberts hacking through a heap of tangled bodies.

Southport were unable to retain their impressive first half hegemony as Aldershot seized the initiative after the restart. On loan Tranmere keeper Peter Brezovan was dominant and decisive throughout ensuring Southport weathered sustained pressure.

The Shots pressure resulted in a 57 th minute goal when Brett Williams met a 35 yard free kick that exploited indecision in the Southport defence. Southport’s grit and determination ensured Aldershot were unable to build on that break through.

Despite a series of well delivered Aldershot set pieces the spirited Sandgrounders secured their first away Vanarama Conference victory since December 28th.
