JIM’S JOTTINGS from the NORTHAMPTON TOWN programme

The waiting is over and Rovers are back, thank goodness in the shortest possible time, into the Football League.

The nightmare has finished and we can look forward to this coming season with real optimism.

It  still puzzles many of us quite how we managed to get relegated when in a position of strength going into the final weeks of that 2013/14 campaign but if any club could do it then Rovers are the team.

After sweeping aside Forest Green in the semi-finals of the play-offs I have to say that we turned in an awful performance in the Wembley Final in front of the biggest-ever Conference Play-off crowd – one of several records set thanks to you brilliant ‘Gasheads’ who stayed behind the team throughout. Thankfully five superbly struck penalties finished the job and we can all now smugly sympathise with Grimsby Town for whom the nightmare continues.

I went to every single game last season and I mostly enjoyed the experience with friendly fans and officials at just about every club. I believe that we, club and fans, did not try to ‘Lord it’ over the opposition and this was appreciated.

This attitude stemmed from the Boss who never once demeaned the opposition. If Rovers have done any one thing right over the last few seasons it is to make Darrell Clarke the Manager as he has completely transformed the attitude of the club and that of several players who looked like they had reached the end of the road with us.

He has a Trollope-like relationship with staff, players and supporters and I for one am glad that Darrell has extended his stay with us as Rovers try to make a real fist of things in League 2 for a change.

So we start a new era in our League membership today with a another visit from the ‘Cobblers’ who have provided regular opposition for Rovers over recent decades and they are sure to present Darrell’s boys with a difficult afternoon.

Off the field of course things have not gone so well recently with the incredibly long and tortuous saga of the UWE Stadium continuing with the Football Club going to appeal.

I know that you ‘Gasheads’ will turn out regardless so please get behind the boys in blue this afternoon and let’s get this new and exciting season started just as we finished the last one.

Up the Pirates!
