Bristol Rovers v Birmingham City on Tuesday 11th August 2015.
A very warm welcome to the Memorial Stadium to the directors, staff and supporters of Birmingham City FC.
Living only a 35 minute drive from St Andrews, Birmingham are a club I know very well indeed.
In fact, when I first moved to Birmingham in 1969, the Blues were the first club I went to see and went on to follow them from time to time, that’s when I wasn’t watching The Gas of course.
I had the good fortune to witness Trevor Francis make his debut in what was, in my opinion, one of the best Birmingham teams of more recent years. Gary Rowett has done a fantastic job at St Andrews and I wish Gary and his side every success for this forth coming season – tonight being the exception.
My last visit to St Andrews was that disappointing 3-0 3rd Round FA Cup exit at the hands of Birmingham on that very cold wet Tuesday evening in January 2014. My memories are not so much the match and Elliot’s early miss, but of the several thousand Gasheads who made the journey from Bristol with the home club so overwhelmed by numbers who came that some were still trying to get in the ground at 8.30pm close on half time.
It was a brilliant turnout and just goes to show what superb supporters we have who support the lads no matter what, no matter where and no matter when.
Tonight we face the Blues, in the 1st round Capital One Cup, and without doubt, a win for us tonight would give our season the start we all wanted.
However, knowing the Blues as I do, it promises to be a very competitive match and one I am eagerly anticipating.
Over the it has been a busy time with supporters bringing all sorts of issues to the attention of Ken and myself. These issues include the lack of disabled spaces, availability of shirts for sale, the Fun Day, Sainsbury’s and the new stadium, support for local charities and many more. May I assure you, every issue is important to us, however trivial it may seem to you and we will, wherever possible, do what we can to help.
