 Long Time No Write

It’s been four weeks since I last put ‘pen-to-paper’ for the ‘Pirate’ and I’m now writing in advance of last Saturday’s trip to Mansfield so there will be another game to comment on when Newport become the second ‘County’ to visit us inside five days on Saturday.

Tonight we welcome the oldest club of all with Notts gracing the ‘Mem’ for the first time in a couple of years.

A lot has happened since I last wrote for the Portsmouth match programme and things did not get off to a very good start with another home defeat suffered at the hands of the League 2 favourites. Clearly ‘Pompey’ are a very strong team at this level but Rovers did not look at anything like their best on the day.

So a fifth defeat already this season did not bode well for those of us heading up north for an autumn break that took in two tough away games for the lads.

We needn’t have worried though because the Boss made five changes to the team, crucially bringing-in two of our most experienced players in McChrystal and Mansell who were back to fitness following injury. That did the trick and a revitalised Rovers outplayed hosts Hartlepool United under the Victoria Park lights before returning to the other side of the Pennines four days later to win a seven-goal thriller at Morecambe.

That was not the end of it of course as we all returned here a fortnight ago to turn over high-flying Wycombe Wanderers in the 2nd Round of the JPT and it was a shame that the following Saturday’s League fixture against the same opponents had to be cancelled due to our international call-ups.

Off the field it was a major disappointed for the Executive Committee to have to postpone the Supporters Club Annual general Meeting that had been scheduled for October 8th. Due to a variety of reasons we could not get the Club’s end-of-year accounts audited in time and we had no option but to cancel.

No AGM can be held without the accounts being available, especially in view of our turnover this last financial year so we have now left ourselves with plenty of time by postponing it until 26th November and meantime we will be posting all the figures on the club’s website as soon as they are returned from the auditors and formally passed by the Committee.

Our sincere apologies for the late postponement and I hope everyone intending to be there can make the new date and also be able to question the Chairman and Manager at the forum that will follow the business part of the meeting.

Hopefully the trio of consecutive victories was followed-up by another three points at Mansfield last Saturday and we can now put together a similar run of home wins for you faithful fans here at the ‘Mem’, starting with a ‘County double’!

Up the Pirates.
