Gloucester City FC YD 1 v 4 Bristol Rovers Academy Under 18.
The BRFC Academy Under 18 side progressed to the second round of the FA Youth Cup following a victory against Gloucester City FC YD thanks to goals from Olly Mehew (2), Lewis Ellington and Eliot Green.
“We played quite well in the first half,” said Youth Team manager Alan Walsh, “and scored twice within the space of three minutes.
“The first goal arrived after 17 minutes when George Corp picked the ball up in the middle of the park and found Eliot Green with his pass. Eliot cut inside and delivered a defence splitting pass between the two central defenders and a perfectly timed run by Olly Mehew saw him slide the ball past the goalkeeper from 16 yards.
“The second goal arrived after a throw in out on the right was cleared as far as Tom Fry who played the ball into Lewis Ellington who in turn found Tyrone Tucker-Dixon and continued his run.
Tyrone hit a first time ball into the box and Lewis beat the goalkeeper with a shot into the far corner.”
The home side pulled a goal back within five minutes due, in part, to some poor defending, but we still held on to our lead at the interval.
“We asked the boys to be more positive and to retain possession better after the break, something they took on board because up until the final minutes of the game we totally controlled proceedings, playing some very good possession football and scoring twice more.
“Olly Mehew was on target again on the hour mark, when he picked up a pass from George Corp and ran on before slotting the ball past the home goalkeeper, while the final goal of the game was scored by Eliot who picked up on a poor clearance from the keeper and volleyed it into the net from 40 yards.”
