The idea behind our ball mastery sessions is simply that the better each boy is with the ball at their feet then the better they can play their role in the team, but also we want our boys to love having the ball at their feet as this will also develop their love of playing the game. As our coaching curriculum works in 6 week blocks we have 6 separate ball mastery sessions that the boys will work on each week. Each session in turn has 5 skills for the boys to master ranging from static controlling techniques through to complex turns to beat an opponent when travelling with the ball.
All of the boys are encouraged to spend 20 minutes each day practicing the ball mastery skills for the week they are in. On Tuesdays at training the coaches will lead the ball mastery session and observe each boy performing each skill, giving corrective advice where required. The Tuesday session will end with one boy demonstrating a wildcard trick of their own. The whole group will observe this and be tasked to go and practice over the rest of the week.
On Fridays the boys lead the sessions and have freedom to carry out the skills in any order but they are encouraged to combine several at a time. They will also be observed carrying out the wildcard skill of the week. Coaches will also lead ‘Ball Mastery Bingo’ in certain games where the team will be challenged to tick off all the skills from the week in a game situation
