Bristol Rovers 1 v 1 Plymouth Argyle.

Bristol Rovers have played the last of their three games in the Final Third Development League Cup.

It  was played at 1pm at Rovers’ training ground, The Lawns in Station Road, on Tuesday 2nd February 2016.

Bristol Rovers needed to win this match if they were to clinch first place in Southern Group B.

This 1-1 draw means that Swindon Town are in the final and play Southern Group A winners Southend United.

Cristian Montano opened the scoring for Bristol Rovers with a precise finish past goalkeeper James Bittner.

He received the ball on the halfway line, held off two opponents before opening the scoring early in the first half.

Olly Mehew went close to scoring when he headed wide at the far post from a Cristian Montano cross.

Ryan Broom also placed his shot the wrong side of the upright when breaking through on goal.

After the break Kieran Preston made good saves from Alex Fletcher, Jordan Foster and Louis Rooney.

James Bittner had to make a good stop at the feet of Montano to prevent Plymouth going further behind.

Alex Fletcher netted a 70th minute equaliser to make the final score 1-1 as Argyle improved after the interval.


Alex Fletcher pounced on a loose ball to score from close-range following a corner mid-way through the second period.

Jake Gosling and Blake Davies both hit the woodwork for Bristol Rovers before the game ended in a draw.

“Considering the amount of one-on-ones we had we should have won the game easily,” said Marcus Stewart.

He added: “There were a lot of positives to take from the game but our finishing wasn’t one of them. ”

Marcus Stewart stated; “I have no complaints about the effort but we weren’t clinical enough in front of goal and that makes it feel like a defeat.”

Plymouth Argyle Assistant Manager Craig Brewster said, “James Bittner, on his 34th birthday, did very well and he made a couple of very good saves.”

He added,  “On-loan Hibernian defender Jordon Forster make his Plymouth Argyle debut while midfielder Graham Carey continued his rehabilitation after injury.”

“They got 65 minutes each and came through well in difficult conditions – it was windy and the pitch was heavy.”
