On this Day: Don Megson
June 12, 2018
On this day in 1936 Don Megson, who represented Rovers both as a player and a manager, was born in the Cheshire town of Sale.
A full back, who had played for Sheffield Wednesday in 386 league games, scoring six times, as well as captaining the Owls in the 1966 FA Cup final, Megson signed for Rovers in March 1970 as a player-coach. He was to play in 31 league games for Rovers, scoring once, before becoming the fourth former Wednesday player to manage Rovers.
Between 1972 and 1977, when he took over at Portland Timbers in North America, he led Rovers to a Watney Cup triumph and promotion to Division Two.
