With the Southern League elected en masse to the Football League in 1920, Rovers lost 2-0 at Millwall in their inaugural match.

A crowd of 25,000 at The Den saw Rovers lose to two second half goals. First, “Banger” Voisey scored from the edge of the area after 52 minutes, then goalkeeper Harry Stansfield lost the flight of the ball in the sun seven minutes later and Jimmy Broad headed home the second.

Ironically Rovers alsp featured in the final league game ever played at The Den, winning 3-0 in May 1993.
