Ex Gas on FA Cup weekend

With a great deal of assistance from Football Historian Stephen Byrne, we take a look back at last weekend when a number of former Rovers players were in action for their current clubs. There are almost certainly more instances of former players being in the news a week ago, but here we take a look at just a handful of them.

Ryan Loft, who missed a penalty against us the week before, fared even worse last Saturday as he  was sent off whilst playing for Crawley Town who were beaten by non league  Boreham Wood whose first team coach is former Rovers player Ross Weare.

Meanwhile Josh Grant played as a substitute for Carlisle United, who were surprise 3-2 winners at Reading (after extra time) whose Chief Executive is former Rovers defender Joe Jacobson.

Hiram Boateng played for York City who only lost at Barnsley to a stoppage time goal. Rollin Menayese (Macclesfield Town) and Scott Rendell (AFC Totton) both scored as Macclesfield were 6-3 winners in that contest.

Dom Telford, now with Gateshead, was an unused substitute in their shock 2-0 win at AFC  Wimbledon while former Rovers loan striker John Akinde scored, but his fifth tier Basildon lost to sixth tier Chelmsford City

Another former Rovers player, Jevani Brown, played as Hemel Hempstead took Wigan Athletic to penalties. He converted his spot kick, but his side lost 5-3 after one attempt was saved.

Connor Taylor was sent off as his Wycombe side beat Plymouth Argyle 2-0 at Adams Park, while there were three former Rovers players involved in the Brackley Town v Notts County tie. Tyler Lyttle was on the winning side as Brackley beat their League Two opponents4-3 in a penalty shootout. Kelle Roos was in goal for County, who were skippered by Ollie Norburn. ( no doubt they will be Back at The Mem on 29th November when we play County)

In Scotland, Jonah Ayunga was a 63rd minute substitute for St Mirren against Motherwell in a Scottish League Cup semi final, which they won 4-1, meaning they will now play Celtic in the Final. (still ongoing as I write)

Further afield Bo Henriksen’s Mainz conceded a late equaliser and, given current form, his job must be in some jeopardy while Mikkel Andersen’s Herlev lost 2-0 at home to Gladsaxe in Denmark.

Chris Lines and Ryan Clarke were both in the Corsham Town side beaten 3-1 at Slimbridge and, back up in Scotland, Gavin Reilly went on as substute for Arbroath in their 3-0 win against Ross County.

Deon Moore, now playing for National League South side Maidstone United, was on the losing side as they suffered a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Tonbridge Angels.

Chris Dickson, now playing for Isthmian Premier League side Cray Wanderers was in the side held to a 1-1 draw at Cheshunt, and in his first game as player/coach of Wessex Downton, Brett Pitman saw his side win 3-1 at Cowes..

Luke Russe played for Bath City in their 2-0 home defeat to Horsham, while Alefe Santos was in the Shaftesbury side that won 3-2 at Inkberrow in a Southern League Division
