Jul 5, 2026 | News

Since his death was announced just a few short days ago, many tributes have been paid to former Bristol Rovers Director Vernon Stokes and it’s very clear that he was respected by so many he came into contact with and for his work behind the scenes at our Football Club.

The following tribute has been received from Rob Brine, on behalf of the Bristol Rovers President’s Club and we are pleased to publish it on their behalf.

‘The President’s Club Committee was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our friend and long standing member, Vernon Stokes, who died on 1st July 2026 at the age of 99.

While Vernon’s contribution to Bristol Rovers has rightly been recognised by the Football Club, those of us within the President’s Club remember him not only as a former Director and Honorary Vice President, but as one of the driving forces behind the Club’s future during one of the most significant periods in its history.

Vernon was instrumental in helping establish and grow the President’s Club into a vital source of financial support for Bristol Rovers. Through his vision, commitment and tireless efforts, he played a leading role in bringing together supporters, local businesses and fellow Gasheads to raise the funds that helped make the purchase of the Memorial Stadium possible. That achievement enabled Bristol Rovers to return home to Bristol, securing a permanent home for generations of supporters and players to come.

Throughout his years with the President’s Club, Vernon was always generous with his time, encouragement and unwavering loyalty. He believed passionately that supporters could make a real difference to the future of the Football Club, and his leadership inspired many others to become involved. The President’s Club became much more than a matchday gathering—it became an important part of the fabric of Bristol Rovers, thanks in no small measure to Vernon’s dedication.

Even after stepping down from the Board, Vernon remained a familiar and much valued presence within the President’s Club. His warmth, humility and genuine interest in everyone he met made him a treasured friend to so many. Although he was no longer able to attend matches in recent years, his love for Bristol Rovers never diminished, and he continued to follow every game with the same passion that had defined his lifelong support.

Those who had the privilege of knowing Vernon will remember a gentleman of integrity, kindness and quiet determination. His legacy lives on not only in the history of Bristol Rovers, but in the Memorial Stadium itself—a lasting reminder of what can be achieved through dedication, generosity and an unwavering belief in the Club.

Everyone associated with the President’s Club extends our sincere condolences to Vernon’s family, friends and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

We are proud to have called him one of our own, and his contribution to both the President’s Club and Bristol Rovers will never be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Vernon, and thank you for everything you gave to the Gas.’
