Eastville’s last floodlight pylon

Here is one for Gasheads of a certain age.

Once again we are indebted to Keith Brookman who has penned us the following article on the taking down of the last remaining floodlight pylon at Eastville, way back in 2003.

The club’s last link with Eastville Stadium disappeared on 4th December 2003 when the last remaining floodlight pylon, which had graced the East Bristol skyline since Rovers left its spiritual home in 1986, was taken down.

There to witness the event were former Rovers players Peter Aitken, Alfie Biggs and David Mehew and they were joined by former manager Bobby Campbell and former kit man Ray Kendall, along with Associate Director Peter Thornell.

Although Trevor Morgan is credited with scoring the last ever league goal at Eastville, it was Mehew who scored the last ever goal at the old stadium, in a reserve team game against Watford.

‘I remember sitting down after that game and thinking that I had scored ,the last ever goal at Eastville,’ said Boris, adding,; ‘but I didn’t think I would have to wait 17 years to be interviewed about it!

‘For the record, it wasn’t a spectacular effort, as I managed to scuff it under goalkeeper Steve Sherwood’s body at the Tote End.

‘We knew we were leaving Eastville and although the ground was a little bit scruffy by then there was still a great atmosphere for evening games. As well as playing in the last game there, I also went to the last greyhound meeting there. It’s all part of Rovers history and it was nice to be a part of it.’

The photos shown here are of the floodlight being lowered to the ground and then being cut up and a group photo that reads (L-R) IKEA representative, Peter Thornell, Peter Aitken, Ray Kendall, Alfie Biggs, David Mehew, Bobby Campbell.
