No fewer than five ex-Rovers stars appeared in Saturday’s National League play-off final as Boreham Wood faced Tranmere Rovers for a place in the Football League next season.
Danny Woodards, Ricky Shakes and Angelo Balanta all turned out for Boreham Wood with Jeff Hughes and Ollie Norburn lining up for Tranmere.
The game got off to an explosive start with Tranmere defender Liam Ridehalgh being dismissed after just 48 seconds for a rash two-footed challenge. Incredibly Tranmere took the lead five minutes later through an Andy Cook strike. Boreham Wood drew level deep into first-half stoppage time when Bruno Andrade scored. The ten men of Tranmere made light of the numerical disadvantage and James Norwood headed the goal that saw them return to the Football League in the 81st minute.
Ths game saw Jeff Hughes say goodbye to professional football in England; he joined Larne in his native Northern Ireland in April and was loaned back to Tranmere for the remainder of this season.
