FSA response to Government’s football regulator plans
Posted on 23rd February 2023
Almost two years ago six clubs from the Premier League tried to smash more than a century of footballing tradition by forming an invitation-only European Super League.
Such was the backlash from supporters across the country that Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur eventually backed out of the plot.
The Government then started its Fan-led Review of Football Governance and invited all of football to commit to the process, which was chaired by Tracey Crouch MP.
The FSA engaged enthusiastically, producing detailed evidence and ensuring 130+ of our member supporter organisations, across all levels, appeared in front of the review.
This Government White Paper flows from the review – a review during which all of football had an opportunity to participate.

Kevin Miles, chief executive of the FSA, said:
“The FSA engaged in the Fan-led review from day one and we warmly welcome the historic commitment from the Government to introduce an independent regulator of English football.
“The football governance white paper clearly addresses our key concerns around ownership, rogue competitions and sustainability and of course we support any proposals that offer fans a greater voice in the running of their clubs.
“We look forward to engaging with the Government on the next steps.”
