Central defender Shannon Francis was the Gas Girls heroine as she headed home a 90th minute corner to give the girls a 2-1 victory over Longwell Green Ladies in a match that was switched to Lockleaze due to the waterlogging of Longwell Green’s pitch. Shannon, who has just made the step up from the Development side and playing only her second first team game took to Twitter after the game saying, “Whatta day! Absolutely buzzing to score the goal to get the Gas another three points”.
Midfielder Courtney Adams had given us a first half lead when she turned in a Rossana Rocha corner, her first goal for the club. The lead was short-lived when Longwell Green caught us on the break, the first league goal we have conceded at Lockleaze.
The girls kept plugging away throughout the second half showing a real desire to grab the winner even though it was not a vintage performance in challenging windy conditions. Hitting the crossbar three times they dominated the half but still needed two fantastic saves from keeper Shawna Hannam which won her the player of the match award.
The girls now head into the festive break nine points clear at the top of the table having won all nine games. They are next in action on 12th January when they entertain Abbeymead Rovers at Lockleaze Sports Centre. Enjoy the break girls, you deserve it.
