Bristol Rovers meet Wycombe Wanderers in league action for the 38th time tonight, having won 12 of the previous 36 encounters while Wycombe have won 20 and there’s been five draws. In those games Rovers have scored 39 goals while tonight’s hosts have scored 48.
The first league meetings between the sides came in 1994/95. They played out a goalless draw at Adams Park on 27th August 1994 and Rovers won the return fixture at Twerton Park on 11th March 1995 when Gareth Taylor scored the only goal of the game.
Last season’s matches saw Wycombe win both encounters. Joe Low, son of former Rovers player Josh, and Garath McCleary scored in their 2-1 win at The Memorial Stadium in August 2023, with Harvey Vale netting Rovers’ consolation.
At Adams Park on New Year’s Day 2024, Wycombe were 3-2 winners. Ryan Tafazolli, Sam Vokes and former Rovers defender Luke Leahy all scored before Chris Martin scored twice for Rovers in time added on.
Earlier this season, on 28th September 2024, Wycombe were 2-1 winners, scoring through Daniel Harvie and Low after Scott Sinclair had given Rovers a 17th minute lead.
Over 30 players have turned out for both clubs, including goalkeepers Scott Bevan, Jamal Blackman, Lance Cronin, Brian Parkin and Scott Shearer. Let’s not forget Andy Rammell, who scored 25 goals in 69 league games for Wycombe and was once sent off playing for them against Rovers. He’s regarded a bit of a cult hero amongst Rovers supporters, which is quite an achievement when you consider he appeared in only 12 league games for the club, four of which were from the bench! His four goals in three games for Rovers at the end of the 2002/03 season staved off the threat of relegation.
Two former Rovers players are currently on Wycombe’s books, namely playing for Wycombe, namely Luke Leahy and Brandon Hanlan though Hanlan is currently on loan at Stevenage.
At least 15 players have made their Rovers league debut against Wycombe, a total that includes Peter Beadle, Josh Low and Bobby Zamora.
Wycombe have lost only one league game in 2025, a 1-0 home loss at the hands of Huddersfield Town on 7th January though they have drawn their last two matches, against Cambridge United and Crawley. They are currently second in the league standings, with 60 points from 30 games.
Rovers, with 35 points from their 30 games, are in 17th place but travel to Adams Park on the back of last Saturday’s 3-1 win against Burton Albion. That game followed a draw against Stockport County in which another late goal saw Rovers take a point from a 1-1 draw.
Rovers have won only five of the 18 league games played against Wycombe at Adams Park but with a good number of Gasheads backing them tonight, it’s time for number six!
We wish all travelling Gasheads a safe trip to and from the match.
