Rovers and Fulham: a history

Aug 21, 2017 | News

Tomorrow night’s Carabao Cup clash will be the 63rd competitive fixture between the two sides. Rovers currently lead the head to head by 25 victories to Fulham’s 24 with 13 games being drawn.

Rovers record at Craven Cottage has improved over the years after a very difficult start. Our first three visits there resulted in six goal defeats, followed by 3-2 and 5-2 losses before we eventually came away with a result after a 4-4 draw.

Probably the most important games between the two sides occurred in May 1989 when they met in the semi-finals of the Third Division play-offs. After a narrow 1-0 victory in the first leg at Twerton Park Rovers ran amok in the second half at Craven Cottage scoring four goals without reply. We went on to lose the two-legged final to Port Vale.

The last time the two sides met was in an FA Cup third round tie in January 2008 when League One Rovers travelled to Premier League Fulham and gained a very creditable 2-2 draw with Danny Coles and Craig Hinton on target for Rovers. The replay at the Mem finished goalless with Rovers famously winning the penalty shoot-out 5-3 after Jimmy Bullard missed Fulham’s spot-kick and Craig Disley held his nerve and scoring the crucial fifth penalty.
