Rovers and Walsall: a history

Sep 8, 2017 | News

Tomorrow’s game is the 99th meeting of the two sides and the head to head record is very close; Rovers lead with 39 victories to Walsall’s 38 with 21 games being drawn.

The two sides first met way back in August 1927 when Rovers won a Division Three (South) encounter 5-2. In fact Rovers came on top in the first six meetings, Walsall finally breaking their duck with a 4-2 win in November 1930.

In recent times there have been some very one-sided encounters. In March 2009 Rovers registered a stunning 5-0 victory through two Aaron Lescott strikes and two further goals from Darryl Duffy, with Craig Disley adding the other.

There have been dark times too. Rovers have suffered six goal defeats in 1986 and 2011, a five goal defeat in 1983.

Last season’s corresponding fixture ended in a 1-1 draw with Walsall winning the return 3-1.
