Sweeney called up by Ireland U21s

Rovers defender Ryan Sweeney has been called up by Ireland’s Under-21’s to play in next month’s UEFA Under-21 Championships Qualifying fixture.

The on loan defender has been called up by Republic of Ireland Under-21 Head Coach Noel King for their Group 5 clash with Azerbaijan in Baku.

The Irish face a testing journey to the Azeri capital for their second game in the group on Tuesday, September 5th.

Sweeney was also part of King’s side beat Kosovo in their first game in the group in March.

As well as travelling more than 5,000 kilometres to Baku, King’s side will have to contend with temperatures likely to be still in the 30s.

Following his inclusion in the Republic of Ireland’s Under-21 squad, Ryan will be unavailable for the club’s televised fixture against Bradford City.
