Rovers defend in depth
A draw on the road against one of the sides tipped to be in the promotion mix come the end of the season, as well as a clean sheet, made for a satisfactory afternoon’s work for Matt Taylor and his side.
Admittedly, the home side created the best chances of the first half as Chris Tiehi hit the post and goalkeeper Josh Griffiths made three outstanding saves, first of all denying Cameron Humphreys and then twice keeping out efforts from Sam Nombe.
Josh Griffiths
Isaac Hutchinson had Rovers best chance of the opening 45 minutes but Dillon Phillip saved comfortably. Tiehi saw a shot hit the side netting early in the second half, while Luke McCormick fired over the bar at the other end shortly after replacing Ruel Sotiriou.
There was little respite for Rovers, though, as Rotherham probed for an opening. Tiehi hit one shot over the bar and another wide of the mark while Jamie McCart hit the bar and Griffiths saved well from Jonson Clarke-Harris.
The final chance of the game also fell to the hosts though Jordan Hughill volleyed his effort just over the bar.
THEY SAID WHAT?
‘We probably had the best chance of the second half when Luke McCormick hit his shot over the bar, but we rarely threatened their goal and certainly didn’t threaten it often enough. Josh Griffiths was important; that’s why we’ve recruited him. He’s here to play well and perform well.’ (Rovers manager Matt Taylor)
‘It’s an important point for us. I think the first fifteen minutes were good. We started with real momentum and then kind of slipped away. We defended well collectively and came out with a point.’ (Rovers defender Clinton Mola)
‘This is a good Bristol Rovers side. It’s the best point that they will ever get in their history because they hardly got out of their half, but when you lay siege to the goal like that you have to punish the team and you have to take the chances.’ (Rotherham manager Steve Evans)
