Fans boycott local derby in price protest
More than 1,500 Borussia Dortmund fans are expected to boycott one of the biggest games in German football, their local derby with Schalke 04, in a protest at enormous ticket price rises. Fans have said ‘enough is enough’ at an almost 50% surcharge for tickets for the fixture, and have been returning them in their droves.
The hope is that gaps on the terrace for the weekend’s biggest game (the equivalent of the Old Firm or Liverpool v Manchester United) will send a powerful message to the clubs that fans will not stand for ridiculous price rises.
