A tribute to Stuart Campbell
January 1, 2000
GOOD LUCK STUART
It came as no real surprise today to learn that Stuart Campbell has been released from his contract with Rovers as it has been clear for many weeks that Stuart did not fit into Manager Paul Buckle’s plans. Whatever one’s view on the current situation there is no doubt that Stuart has achieved ‘hero status’ with many Rovers supporters having captained the team through the club’s most successful period since our return to Bristol. Leading the team out at both the Millennium and Wembley Stadiums in the same season, going on to lift the League 2 Play-off promotion trophy then captaining the team into the quarter-finals of the F.A. Cup were notable achievements. Voted the Supporters Club’s ‘Player-of-the-Year’ three times the current holder undoubtedly won it last season on the back of his ultimately (just) unsuccessful attempt to keep the club in League 1 when acting as Caretaker Manager.
Stuart has acted with great dignity, as always, during what has been very traumatic last year and it is very sad that Rovers’ supporters will not have the chance to say a proper ‘farewell’ to one of our greatest players of the post-war era. So, on behalf of all our members I would to take this opportunity to thank Stuart for all that he has done for Bristol Rovers and to wish him all the very best for the future!
