A tremendous boost!

January 1, 2000

Many Congratulations on reaching £1 million!

At a time when there has never been so much excitement surrounding the future of our football club, I am writing to personally thank you for supporting the Bristol Rovers Supporters Club Share Scheme. With very high hopes of a new stadium in mind, what makes this moment even more poignant is that thanks to your efforts, this scheme has now raised almost El million for Bristol Rovers FC.

What a tremendous boost to the club the Share Scheme has proved since it was first launched in December 2002. I’m sure you will recall at that time Rovers were bottom of League Two, losing around £20,000 a week and having to repay loans taken out to buy the Memorial Stadium. What an investment that has proved to be!

As you will appreciate today we are in a very difficult trading climate as well as playing football in League Two. So those pressures are still there. Income coming through the turnstiles covers only a fraction of playing and staff costs. This means in order to help balance the books, Rovers depend on non-matchday revenue to cover operating costs and this leaves a limited ability to pay off debts, maintain the ground and, at the same time, invest in youth development which provides the players we need for the long-term future of our football club. The success of our youth scheme is such that several of the players have since received full-time professional contracts and one or two are pushing for a place in the first-team squad.

The Supporters Club hold 5.65% of allocated shares. This has enabled us to have two full members on the Bristol Rovers Board in Ken Masters and myself. Ken has worked tirelessly to support the community side of the football club and deserves immense thanks for the work he has done. In my short time, I have tried to ensure your voice is heard through Fans on Board and I hope we are now starting to see some of those rewards come through. Without doubt, without the Share Scheme none of this would have been possible.

Our relationship with the Board has never been stronger. We are now waiting for the second part of planning permission and if Bristol City Council support the Sainsburys application, then the future of our football club looks very bright indeed. It is therefore vital that the Share Scheme continues to thrive. That is why we welcome your support and that of friends and family as well as corporate support.

Under the Share Scheme agreement, the Supporters Club can purchase two shares for £5.50. Fans can contribute to the Share Scheme via one of 4 options:

  1. Bronze at £10.83 per month per month

  2. Silver at £21.67 per month per month

  3. Gold at £43.34 per month per month

  4. Platinum at £83.34 per month per month

The Corporate Scheme for businesses costs £1,200 per year, although tax advantages mean that it effectively costs less than a Platinum subscription.

Further details can be found in the ‘Membership Levels’ section including details of how you can benefit from a range of discounts on leisurewear, complimentary match tickets with meals and season ticket discounts as well as free membership to the Supporters Club.

Whilst the contribution made by the Share Scheme members has been magnificent this is only a start. We need to keep contributing.

If you would like to join the Share Scheme or introduce someone else, then please contact Clare McDonagh at Pirate Leisure on 0117 9524001 or [email protected].
