Yorkshire Delight For Gas Girls
September 12, 2005
The match started evenly with few opportunities. The Gas girls first and only chance of the half came in the 8th minute when a cross from Rachael Axon found Kate Ward who headed wide. Leeds immediately countered with a cross from the left, which was also headed wide. Leeds could have opened the scoring in the 16th minute when a through ball found a forward on her own but she shot tamely.
The home side took the lead in the 23rd minute when a back pass was picked up by a Leeds forward who rounded our goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain to shoot into an empty net. The Yorkshire side continued to dominate and could have been two up in 43rd minute but for a fine clearance off the line from Tara Kidwell.
The second half saw Helen Done and Carla Ward come on in place of Kath Morgan and Dani Bird and a much better performance ensued from the gas girls. A succession of corners saw a header over by Carla Ward and a clearance off the line before in the 68th minute a claim for a gas girls penalty for hand-ball was turned down by the referee. In the 63rd minute, Bristol used their final sub, with Carrie Kveton coming on for Kate Ward. The Gas girls continued to press, and on 68 minutes a cross from the right found Carla Ward who flicked on to an unmarked Tara Kidwell who sent a rasping shot from 15 yards into the net giving the Leeds goalkeeper no chance.
Leeds came close to regaining the lead on 85 minutes when a long ball hit the bar and fell to a Leeds forward but her goal bound shot was cut out with some smart tackling by Claire Scanlan and in the 90th minute they hit the bar again but this time the rebound was collected by the visiting goalkeeper. The gas girls threatened in time added and saw a shot saved from six yards before a corner from Shelley Cox went in high under the bar and the Leeds goalkeeper could only help it into the net.
Even after this a cross from Carrie Kveton resulted in a shot from Carla Ward which produced a good save from the goalkeeper before after six extra minutes the ref brought the game to an end to the delight of the gas girls and their supporters.
A much better second half performance saw a Gas win with two evenly matched sides although a goal from a defensive mistake and playing one up front in the first half seems very familiar.
