Running With Rovers Update
September 18, 2005
Recently it was announced Rovers were to put a group of Gasheads into the Bristol half marathon this year. Volunteers were sought to gain sponsorship with half going towards supplying sports equipment for local schools and half towards the creche to be built at the Mem. Ken Masters was the driving force behind signing people up for this and was often to be seen hanging around various bars at the Mem, clipboard in hand ala Dennis Norden.
He takes up the story here.
Putting in the training to prepare for the Bristol Half Marathon is not for the faint hearted.
Forty seven gasheads expressed an interest in running at the back end of last season. A combination of late entries, injuries and time constraints has seen the number whittle down to fifteen brave souls. Leading the ladies is Debbie Spencer, husband Kevin is Rovers Director, and Yvonne Mockridge. Youngest runner is Liam Fletcher, just seventeen. [image2]Jonathan Wells, Marketing Director of running vest sponsor SAM Learing Ltd, is based in the North East. Jonathan is making it a double by running in the Great North Run two weeks previous. Jon Davey, Simon Rouse, Matt Jackson, David Pope and Gareth Masters are first time runners whilst Mango U reserve team boss Rob Weakley is struggling with a nasty injury picked up in training. Rob joins John Gillam who is also on the injured list. Joining the team are thirty something runners Rod Duddridge, Rob Collins, Jim Spedding and Ken Masters, the oldest runner at sixty one.
The Bristol Half Marathon is now the second largest in the country. Good luck to all our gashead runners. Look out for them on the route and give them a Rovers roar.
