Social Sub Comittee Report

November 22, 2005

[image1]The objective of the Social Committee is to raise vital funds for the football club by organising our own social events and also to help promote use of the Stadium on non-match days.

Since January, we have organised several one off quiz nights based on Music, Film & TV, and of course, Football based themes. Other events we have organised have included a skittles evening, the fantasy football league (an entry form for this years competition can be found elsewhere in this newsletter), the Big Quiz competition and a Punk covers gig. The highlight of the social events must surely be the re-introduction of the Supporters Club Player of the Year Presentation Evening, which due to the performances on the pitch has unfortunately not been held for some 5 years.

Over 100 fans turned up to the awards ceremony where they had the opportunity to mingle with all the squad, management and directors. Entertainment was provided by the live music of Debbie ‘N’ Mr Bloggs and the evening included the chance to watch (and vote for) the Screen Soccer Goal of the Season Competition, won by Ryan Williams, (Thanks for your help, Andy!) and of course, the presentations, to the worthy winners, Lewis Haldane (Young Player) and James Hunt (Player of the Year).

The Steve Larkins Merit Award for outstanding contributions to the club went to Dennis Dunford.
All this and a basket meal for just a fiver – that’s the same price as entry to the Player of the Year Presentation Evening held in 1996!! Nearly ten years later and no effect of inflation! (And that year there was little food if you turned up after 8pm, cos Julian Alsop got to the buffet first, and well, Jules is a big bloke with a very healthy appetite!).

At the time of going to press, the social committee and helpers, are investigating the possibility of a fantastic evenings entertainment with the stars of yesteryear to celebrate arguably Rovers greatest ever cup victory. More details will be announced in due course and hopefully before the AGM.

As well as our own organised events the social committee have also worked hard to promote use of the Stadium and also the games featuring Rovers own Premiership stars, the Gas Girls. Each month Trish at the Stadium organises a night of entertainment costing just a £5, which again includes a basket meal. Also, don’t forget that many midweek live games can also be watched on the Big Screen with Happy Hour from 5-7 on non match days, with selected drinks available at just £1.30 a pint.

Remember, all the profits from the bars and money raised at the social events all go to helping the football club. Please take the time to read the posters around the ground to find out what is going on. Details on forthcoming events are also available on the Fans Forum, SC website, in the programme, the local press, in leaflets posted to local residents, as well
as being announced by Nick Day on match days, so you have no excuses for not knowing about what’s happening!! I have even asked the Supporters Club unofficial radio star Mr Kim Stuckey to give a plug of our events whilst live on air, so if you don’t go to a game, you will still be kept informed.

Many fans will have first hand experience of excellent food and service on offer by the Stadium on match days in hospitality, due to the Share scheme. If anyone would like to book a private party, the same quality of food is available (either a buffet or carvery meal). If you are interested in a private booking, a Christmas Party, or one of the live entertainment evenings, then please contact Trish at the Stadium on 0117 909 6648 or email [email protected]

The Social Committee are always on the lookout for volunteers, or suggestions. If you have some time to spare to help the football club, please let me know by leaving your contact details at any of the club shops or by emailing me on [email protected]

We are also looking to increase the squad numbers of the clubs table topping, front pin first, skittles team “the Pirates”. If anyone is interested in representing the club, please speak to Sue Williams at the Match day Shop on the corner of the Bass terrace. Home games are played on Mondays at the Mem.
