WSM Gas News Update
March 25, 2006
Just over a year ago, the Supporters Club committee were approached by Rovers fans living in Weston super Mare who were interested in forming a local branch of the Supporters Club. As keen and active followers of Rovers, they felt it would be of benefit to form a branch for local Gasheads, giving them the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of membership as fully as those members who live closer to the stadium. After several meetings, both with those proposing to run the newly formed branch and those who just wished to belong to it, we finally reached a point where an election night was held and officers were voted onto a committee.
[image2] WSM Gas Secretary Wilf Aldous takes up the story. “We were already travelling to most home and away matches during a season, but with the growing number of Gasheads in WSM felt we could do more.” We held some provisional meetings at our local pub to sound out whether or not there would be enough interest and got a terrific response, making it clear we should pursue the matter further”. He continued, “We wanted to be part of the Supporters Club and enjoy benefits like early bird prices, and by forming our own branch, were able to organise official travel for our members for both home and away games. By doing this were not only able to have our travel insured like the Supporters Club’s travel is, but also by pooling our costs between our membership we were able to travel much more cost effectively.”

They also had representatives at last year’s fun day at the Mem, letting people know what they do and offering membership to Gasheads from WSM who had not already joined. Additionally, members of the WSM Gas can take advantage of ‘Early Bird’ ticket prices by buying their tickets from Treasurer Adrian Parker’s shop at 124 Milton Road WSM.
Last Saturday saw them holding a skittles evening, with funds raised going towards them sponsoring the match ball at Rover’s forthcoming match against Macclesfield Town, whilst also offering great prizes for their members, ranging from a signed ball to corporate hospitality for the match.
Additional social events, all used as fund raisers for their activities and to help the football club, range from a quiz night on April 15th, to be held at the Windosr Castle function room at WSM, to other proposed fun nights like a horse racing night to be announced soon.
