County 2 v 2 Pirates
September 8, 2015
The BRFC Academy Under 18 side managed to salvage a point.
The game against Newport County ended 2-2 , thanks to goals from George Corp and Tom Fry.
“It wasn’t one of our better performances, in fact it was quite disappointing,” said Alan Walsh.
“We hadn’t played particularly well in the second half of our previous game, against Luton Town, and I asked the boys for a reaction but didn’t get one.
We were poor, both technically, tactically, and physically and couldn’t get a grip on the game or get the ball down on a difficult playing surface.
“Newport dictated the play early on, something that no other team has done so far this season, and opened up a two goal lead.
“We were handed a lifeline by the referee just before half time when we were awarded a penalty following a corner.
I must admit I didn’t spot any infringements, but he indicated that one of our players was being pulled as the ball came into the area and George Corp stepped up to score from the spot with a well taken penalty.
“At half time I asked the lads to up their game in the second half and, to a certain extent they did and limited Newport County to long range efforts. However we didn’t create a great many chances ourselves.
“Our equaliser came from another fortuitous goal ten minutes from time. The ball was played back to the Newport County keeper, who picked it up.
Our coach, Dave Buckwell, was adamant that it had been passed back by a home player and let the referee know, as did our players and substitutes.
After a moment of deliberation the referee awarded us a free kick which was played short to Tom Fry who rifled a shot into the top corner of the net.”
